Position Overview 

Under the general supervision of the VP of Engagement, the Store Manager is responsible for managing the sourcing and fulfillment of merchandise for the organization. Primary duties include inventory management and reporting, shipping and receiving, customer service, eCommerce, budgeting and forecasting, and corporate relationship management as part of our organizational fundraising strategy. The ideal candidate will have experience in sales, the bicycle industry, as well as an enthusiasm for cycling and bicycle travel. The position is based at Adventure Cycling’s headquarters in beautiful and bike-friendly Missoula, Montana.

Merchandise Manager / Sales Manager Key Responsibilities 

Ecommerce & Physical Store Management (45%) 

  • Receive, inspect and enter all incoming inventory upon arrival to the physical store 
  • Restock storefront product as needed 
  • Coordination with vendors to purchase product as needed 
  • Pack and ship product, prepare shippers’ manifests and develop and maintain postal files, prepare daily orders for pickup and deliver to Post Office as needed 
  • Maintain current product data including images, product details, and pricing processing outgoing orders 
  • Prepare and process orders for shipment and reflect inventory changes. Process postage & customs forms for international shipments. Send bulk international departmental mail on a weekly basis 
  • Receive and process orders over the phone and in person 
  • Process outgoing departmental mail and packages and charging accordingly for accounting purposes 
  • Maintain back-order watch list and contact customers as needed
  • Maintain vendor agreements and update terms annually 
  • Manage sourcing, ordering and fulfillment of premiums for programming 
  • Participate in project team for operational and process improvement activities  


Customer Service & Corporate/Business Relations (30%)
 

  • Answer inbound phone calls and respond to emails and web inquiries
  • Perform general customer service duties as they pertain to the store including answering questions related to product details and uses, returns and exchanges 
  • Customer interaction including processing in-person sales, answering product questions 
  • Maintain professional relationships with product vendors  
  • Work with fundraising team to cultivate and manage a portfolio of current and prospective corporate supporters to secure monetary and in-kind donations 


Merchandising (25%) 

  • Evaluate item sales annually and make recommendations to improve assortment 
  • Prepare annual demand forecast by item, by category and develop annual budget for purchases, sales forecast 
  • Review weekly, monthly sales reports to monitor trends and recommend forecast adjustments, monitor expenses for budget accuracy 
  • Prepare sales reports as needed for management team 


Preferred Qualifications 

  • 2-5 years of professional experience in retail management, sales or related field 
  • Strong customer-service skills including verbal and written communication 
  • Experience with syndicated shipping, drop shipping, and in-house shipping methods
  • eCommerce store management experience, preferable WooCommerce, as well as in- person sales experience 
  • Background in bicycle sales and or industry highly preferred 
  • Understanding of the nonprofit sector and mission-driven organizations 
  • Enthusiasm for (and experience with) cycling and bike travel 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 and experience with Microsoft 365 Dynamics CRM environment

Position overview: This role serves the design needs of our marketing, development, programs, and sales departments. Typical annual projects include annual reports, catalogs, brochures, merch graphics, fundraising campaign print and digital materials, letters and postcards, webpage design, email newsletter designs, social media graphics, photoshoots, and any other general marketing or promotional graphics or publications. To be successful, the Graphic Designer should be comfortable in ambiguity, enjoy problem solving, and possess a clear creative vision that coheres to and promotes the Adventure Cycling brand.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Concept and Creative Vision. Determine how best to represent a concept visually to create strong, cohesive, on-brand visual communications. Determine which photographs, art, video, or other design elements to use.  
  • Cohesive Design for Multi-Channel Communications. Oversee the look or style of a campaign or individual element (catalog, webpage, collateral, social post). Articulate creative vision and communicate with internal design staff, external artists and contributors to produce photos, artwork, and videos. Create digital and traditional designs and illustrations. Review and approve designs, artwork, photography, and graphics.  
  • Conceptualize and design various printed materials and web graphics and prepare design projects for press or web implementation.
  • Lead projects in collaboration with the Marketing team.
  • Oversee Adventure Cycling’s brand by managing the brand assets, applying them consistently, and supervising the use of our brand elements.
  • Manage Adventure Cycling photo library and visual archives.
  • Participate in meetings and collaborate with appropriate Adventure Cycling staff and departments to determine objectives and timelines for projects.
  • Communicate with project/department managers keeping them updated on project progress.
  • Accept constructive design input and incorporate appropriate revisions into the final design.

Responsibilities Include:  

  • Event concepting & planning:  Generate and manage a wholistic 50th anniversary idea that allows for a calendar of community building events around the country 
  • Oversight and management of all event activities including:  Secure and manage all event contractors, vendors, permitting and contracts for all events. Responsible for solicitation, negotiating, contracting, and stewardship of all event hospitality in-kind accounts 
  • Project and budget management:  Create and manage timelines, budgets, and decision points with multiple stakeholders for all event-related activities.  Prepare regular executive reports to keep leadership and board informed of upcoming milestones or activities.  
  • Community engagement:  Incorporate opportunities to engage the existing community in the planning and execution of activities around the 50th anniversary, such as providing input via surveys, participating in a planning committee, and joining or leading rides and activities during the event.  
  • Fundraising:  Work collaboratively with VP of Engagement to identify potential sponsors within the food/beverage industry, develop event exposure opportunities, and assess in-kind needs from new and existing corporate accounts.   
  • Volunteer coordination:  Recruit and manage volunteers to execute event activities.  Schedule, train, and supervise event volunteers. 
  • Communications:  Understands and can define the needs for marketing and communications support to ensure events are successful.  Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to create collateral materials and promotional plans to meet event needs and sponsor requirements. 


 
Required qualifications: 

  • 3-5 years experience in event planning and management.  Preference for large scale or festival event planning, or multiple event locations and formats.  Direct experience with venue management, logistics, permitting, food, entertainment, sponsorships, in-kind solicitations, communications, audio/visual, volunteer coordination, incentives and onsite activities, etc.   
  • Self-motivated and able to work effectively both independently and with a team. 
  • Possess superior organizational and project management skills with the ability to prioritize, problem solve, and multitask.  Demonstrates a keen attention to detail, including follow-through and follow-up.

Key Responsibilities:    
The Director of Development will be responsible for building and deploying the strategies needed to grow fundraising revenue to $3M through prospecting, cultivation, and stewardship of individuals, foundations, and corporate supporters. Key areas of focus include:
Donor Management & Pipeline Development (75%) 

  • Donor Management + Solicitation: Develop and execute annual donor engagement and stewardship plans to expand and diversify Adventure Cycling’s major donor pipeline. Secure annual and multi-year donations from Adventure Cycling's top donors (6 figure gifts). Engage with primary funders, and other key stakeholders around organizational impact and plans for the future.    
  • Pipeline Building: Develop strategies for expanding the ACA donor base; complete prospect research to support and augment approach. Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of individuals to grow annual fundraising revenue from $1.4M to $3M in the next 2 years. 
  • Activating ACA Executive Director: Support Adventure Cycling Association Executive Director to assist in cultivating and closing key donations. Develop a strategy to fully leverage executive director in key donor engagement via travel, virtual meetings, and written updates etc. 
  • Special Fundraising Campaigns: Develop and implement a fundraising campaign as part of the organization’s 50th anniversary.  Optimize and oversee the organization's planned giving program.    
  • Budgeting and Reporting: Set, manage, and meet revenue targets for the Development budget. Develop measurable key performance indicators and growth goals for members of the team, and yourself and provide regular reporting on the progress of the fundraising goals.  Assist with creation of internal and Board communications such as quarterly updates, annual reports, board memos, and summaries of strategic initiatives.
     

Leadership and Collaboration (25%) 

  • Collaborative Leadership: Collaborate with and assist VP of Engagement to ensure strategic alignment and continuity between the membership, annual giving, and major giving functions. Collaborate with program teams to secure funding for program development and expansion. Collaborate with the communications team to develop compelling, donor and partner-centric fundraising materials and campaigns. Coach staff and peers to effectively contribute to fundraising strategies.  
  • People Management: Directly supervise and support 1-2 people. Develop annual goals and measures to reflect strong accountabilities and provide regular feedback on progress towards goals.  Outline professional growth and development opportunities.  Maintain excellent work papers and documentation for yourself and the team.  
  • Executive Leadership: Lead and facilitate the Board/Staff Development Working Group. Support and equip the Board and Management team to take a more active role in fundraising activities.  Attend ACA Board Meetings and relevant Committee meetings.  Participate in management team and director’s meetings and provide leadership voice to/from team with annual and strategic planning.   
  • Organizational Culture: Work to create a great place to work, support overall morale, staff retention, and inspire commitment to shared company vision.  Ensure compliance with current ACA policies and procedures. Play a key role in supporting ongoing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Required Qualifications:
 

  • 5-8 years of fundraising experience, with 5+ years' experience focusing full-time on generating philanthropic revenue from a portfolio of individuals and foundations.  
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a portfolio of donor relationships and grow revenue from that portfolio year-over-year.  
  • Proven experience at building and deploying strategies into action plans, meeting 7 figure annual fundraising goals and experience soliciting and closing $100,000+ gifts. 
  • Experience leading major capital campaigns or capacity building campaigns  
  • Ability to travel domestically (20-25% of the year) to visit with donors and partners and to attend events. 
  • Understanding and willingness to engage with issues of institutional and structural racism or bias and their impacts on our organization and community.  
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion and to learn and respect differences of race, ethnicity, gender identity or expression, ability, religion and socio-economic circumstances and class. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Combined background of membership, fund development, corporate sponsorships, grant writing, campaigns, events and all aspects of donor engagement.  Deep understanding of value drivers in multi-channel fundraising models. 
  • Data-driven decision making and excellent analytical skills. Able to extract and analyze data to evaluate KPIs, provide recommendations grounded in performance, best practices, data, and actionable insights.   
  • Relationship builder with the flexibility and finesse to "manage by influence".  Excellent interpersonal skills with individuals and teams.  Quickly builds rapport and credibility with all levels of the organization.   
  • Outstanding problem solving and conflict resolution skills.  Creative thinker, able to balance strategic and financial implications of decision-making.  Handles pressure well and utilizes a collaborative approach to achieve results.   
  • Able to communicate effectively verbally, through presentations, and in writing with various personalities and stakeholders, internally and externally. Quickly writes routine correspondence, reports, and memoranda. 
  • Proficient computer skills with marketing automation and database platforms such as Microsoft Dynamics and Microsoft Marketing.

GUIDELINES FOR CONTRIBUTORS

Adventure Cyclist is a bicycle-travel magazine published nine times yearly by Adventure Cycling Association, a nonprofit service organization for bicyclists. Adventure Cyclist is dedicated to publishing stories about bicycle travel and other recreational cycling subjects.

Adventure Cyclist generally uses two types of stories from freelancers:


  1. Feature-length stories. These should be about specific areas and must be accompanied by high-quality photos, both in terms of content, composition, and size.


  1. The Final Mile. These are essays less about locale than about a singular experience while on a bicycle trip. These run at 1,200-1,500 words and don't require accompanying photos. Note: we do not buy Final Mile essays based on queries, we want to see the full manuscript.



What we pay is negotiable, but generally ranges from $.30 to $.60 per word, depending on various factors. We buy first rights and will consider simultaneous submissions as long as we are informed of the other publications considering your manuscript. Your manuscript should be typed with single returns between paragraphs — no indentations — and single-spaced.

Photos: Feature submissions should be accompanied by electronic images (300 dpi is standard) or color transparencies. Special focus and humor pieces do not require photos, but if you have something good, by all means, send it. And remember, we are always looking for stunning verticals to go on the cover. This submission portal is for use by Adventure Cyclist magazine advertisers only. It is not for story inquiries, submissions, or images. 

PRINT: We only accept advertising creative in PDF or JPEG format. The file should be press-optimized, colorspace set to CMYK (not RGB), and resolution of 300 pixels per inch. Convert all spot colors to CMYK. Please include your company name in the filename. 

NEWSLETTER: Please submit newsletter ads in PNG or JPG format at 728x90 pixels. Files should be 72 dpi and RGB. Include URL with submission.

Once the file is uploaded, you will receive a confirmation email that the file is ready for download by the Adventure Cyclist team.

Thank you for your interest in Adventure Cyclist Online. We love to share bike travel. We accept pitches and stories on a rolling basis year-round, reviewing submissions quarterly and responding as quickly as we can. It's a time-consuming process, so please bear with us.
Guidelines for Contributors & Freelancers

  • Adventure Cyclist Online only publishes original content from real people doing bicycle travel.
  • Photos make all the difference, so please submit high-quality photography with your submission.

At this time we are focusing on articles that either showcase our routes (including the ACRN, USBRS, and Short Routes), programs (guided tours, Community Adventure Rides), and articles that help emerging riders gain the skills and confidence they need for bicycle travel. We may make exceptions for underrepresented riders telling their stories.

Types of content Adventure Cyclist Online generally publishes:
How-To Articles on ways to plan, navigate, pack, prepare, and handle any obstacle of a bicycle trip. Click here for an example.
Trip Reports: There’s nothing like a good story of a bicycle trip or bike overnight of where you went, what was special about it, and how others can do it too. Click here for an example.

No length requirements: Posts should simply be high quality and comprehensive.
Compensation
What we pay is negotiable, but generally ranges from $250-500 per article, with the lower end of the scale representing what we pay first-time writers and the higher end what we pay repeat writers. We buy first rights and will consider simultaneous submissions as long as we are informed of the other publications considering your submission. We do not pay for photography separately.
Not-So-Fine Print

  • We prefer a well-written and high-quality, original article.
  • We prefer an article that reflects the writing style and tone of Adventure Cyclist Online.
  • Include a short author bio including a maximum of 1 anchor text link to your own website.
  • Include proper attribution of photos, data, quotations, and other third-party content referenced in the article.
  • The Adventure Cyclist Online team reserves the right to copy-edit content as we see fit and update it in the future for accuracy and comprehensiveness.
  • Adventure Cycling reserves the right to include calls-to-action to Adventure Cycling content, including but not limited to newsletters, campaigns, and downloadable content.
